IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS 95 USERS

Please note that if you have Windows 95, then when you MUST follow the
instructions for Windows 95 users. When you start the game (ie by double-
clicking on the cricket ball icon) you should see a message warning you
Windows is about to close down. If this message is not displayed before the
game starts then you have NOT followed the installation instructions
correctly, and the game will not run. Check the Properties of the cricket
ball icon - make sure that the program it points to is ASHES97.EXE - then
locate DOS97.EXE and go into Properties. Work through the instructions for
the setting up of the PIF file.

You will know when you have everything set up correctly, because you will
get the warning message after double-clicking on the cricket ball.

SIMPLIFIED INSTALLATION FOR WINDOWS 95 USERS

NB: IF YOU USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS YOU MUST INSTALL THE GAME IN C:\ASHES97

1. Open up My Computer and go to the CD drive. Double click INSTALL.EXE and
follow carefully the on-screen instructions (NB if you find the text too
small you can change the font size by clicking on the box at the top left of
the menu bar (changing Auto to 10 x 18 works well on my PC).

2. When installation is complete, set up your sound card before exiting from
the installation program. Try the Auto Detect option - it usually works, but
if you find that the sound doesn't work, or if the program crashes when you
start a match, then you may have to enter the correct values yourself.

3. Now go to the Windows desktop and click with the right mouse button on any
blank area. Choose New, then Shortcut. Type in C:\ASHES97\ASHES97.EXE then
click on Next.

4. Choose a name for the shortcut (eg ASHES97) and click on Finish.

5. To run the game, close all other programs, then double-click on the
cricket ball icon. The next thing you see should be a Windows 95 message;
click on Yes and wait for the game to start. Please note that if you follow
these simplified instructions you will not hear any music, though provided
you have a sound card you should get all the atmospheric sound effects
during matches. Instructions for implementing music are given later in this
file.

DETAILED INSTALLATION FOR WINDOWS 95 USERS

(YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU PLAN TO INSTALL THE GAME IN A
DIRECTORY OTHER THAN C:\ASHES97)

Now go to the Windows desktop and click with the
right mouse button on any blank area. Choose New, then Shortcut.

3. Click on Browse and locate the file ASHES97.EXE, which will be in the
directory in which you installed the game. When you find it, double-click on
its folder, and select Next.

4. Choose a name for the shortcut and click on Finish.

5. Now comes the only complicated part, editing the properties in the PIF
file. Go into My Computer and when you find the game directory, select the
file DOS97.EXE using the right mouse button, and choose Properties, then
Program.

6. Change the drive and directory in the Cmd line to the game directory
(eg if you installed the game in a directory GAMES\CRICKET on drive D you
should change it to D:\GAMES\CRICKET\DOS97.EXE).

7. Change the Working directory in a similar fashion (continuing the example
above you would change it to D:\GAMES\CRICKET).

8. Click on Advanced and change the last line of the AUTOXEC.BAT from
LH C:\ASHES97\MOUSE so that it refers to the game directory (eg in our
example you would change it to LH D:\GAMES\CRICKET\mouse. Now click on OK
twice, then close the remaining windows until you get back to the desktop.

9. To run the game, close all other programs, then double-click on the
cricket ball icon. The next thing you see should be a Windows 95 message
warning you that Windows is about to close down. Click on Yes and wait for
the game to begin. If you wish to play music as well as sound effects you
must follow the instructions later in this file.

COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 95 USERS

You should only need to follow these instructions if you are advisee to do so
by Customer Services.

Now go to the Windows desktop and click with the
right mouse button on any blank area. Choose New, then Shortcut.

3. Locate the file ASHES97.EXE, which will be in the directory in which you
installed the game. When you find it, double-click on its folder, and select
Next.

4. Choose a name for the shortcut and click on Finish.

5. Now comes the only complicated part, creating a new PIF file. First,
however, you must delete the example file supplied. Go into My Computer and
when you find the game directory, select the file DOS97.PIF and not DOS97.EXE
(if the file extensions are not shown, select the DOS97 with the pretty MSDOS
icon!). Now go to the Edit menu and choose Cut. Now go to the File menu and select
Delete. The file should disappear. Now select DOS97.EXE using the right mouse
button, and choose Properties, then Program. The Working directory
should be set to the game directory (eg C:\ASHES97 if you chose the default).

6. Click on Advanced, then on the little box next to MS DOS mode - the
'greyed out' options will become visible.

7. Select the option Specify a new MS DOS configuration, and click on
Configuration. Remove the tick against Expanded Memory, and add one alongside
Disk Cache. Check that all other options are turned off, then choose Ok.

8. In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file add the line LH C:\ASHES97\MOUSE (assuming that
C:\ASHES97 is the game directory). Alternatively, if you already have a
Microsoft-compatible mouse driver in your DOS or Windows directory specify
that instead (but it must be MOUSE.COM, not MOUSE.DRV). Now click on Ok twice
and exit My Computer.

9. To run the game, close all other programs, then double-click on the
cricket ball icon. The next thing you see should be a Windows 95 message
warning you that Windows is about to close down. If you do not see this
message, then repeat items 5 to 8 ensuring that you follow the instructions
exactly.

HOW TO GET MUSIC IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 95 (for experienced PC users!)

Once the game is up and running, the next step is to install CD-ROM drivers
so that you can hear the music sound track which plays while you are in the
Menu section of the game.

Windows 95 uses its own CD ROM drivers, and as you may already have
discovered, this often means that you cannot access your CD ROM drive in DOS.
If you followed the Simplified or Detailed installation instructions the
PIF file for DOS97.EXE is one that we have provided and so will not include
any lines specific to your machine, such as CD drivers (however, in our
experience many users don't have these drivers anyway!).

Go to My Computer and locate the file Autoexec.bat in the root directory of
your hard drive. If the full file names (including the extensions) are not
displayed, go to the View menu, select Options, click on the View tab and
turn on the option Show all files - then remove the tick (if there is one)
alongside 'Hide MS DOS file extensions.....'.

If you don't have a file called Autoexec.bat go straight to the note at the
bottom of this section.

Highlight the Autoexec.bat icon and choose Edit from the File menu. This will
display the contents of the file. Hopefully there will be a line which reads
something like:

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000 /V /M:12

The line will vary from machine to machine, but look out for MSCDEX.EXE
(Microsoft's CD extensions) and MSCD000 which is the name usually assigned
to the drive. Carefully write down the line, making sure to differentiate
between the letter O and the number 0.

Close Autoexec.bat, then display the file Config.sys, which will also be in
the root directory. You may need to use Wordpad to display the file (choose
Open with from the File menu). Here you should find a line which installs the
manufacturer's driver for your CD drive. It will look something like this
(although the driver name and parameters are likely to differ):

DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\MTMCDAE.SYS /D:MSCD000 /P:170H,15

Hint: look out for MSCD000 (or the name given to your drive) - this will help
you identify the correct line.

When you find the line write it down carefully, then close the file. (NB If
there is a second line which appears to relate to the CD drive you may need
to include this as well - try without first, though).

Go to the PIF file you created for Dos96.exe and copy the lines into the
Autoexec.bat and Config.sys there. Now when you start up the program the
music should begin to play after a few seconds.

Note
If you bought your PC with Windows 95 pre-installed, then it is possible that
your dealer has set the machine up for Windows 95 only. This will mean that
you don't have an Autoexec.bat file, and also that you don't have the CD
ROM driver(s) necessary for use under DOS. You may be able to obtain the
driver from the drive manufacturer or via the Internet - but we would
recommend that you ask the dealer who sold you the PC to provide it.

Don't worry too much if you can't get the music working - it won't enhance
the GAMEPLAY!

INSTALLATION FOR USERS WHO DO NOT HAVE WINDOWS 95

Do NOT use these instructions if you have Windows 95 - the game may work,
depending on your set-up, but we cannot provide assistance if it does not!

1. Close down Windows. Go to the CD drive (eg by typing D:\ if this is your
CD drive) and type INSTALL. Carefully follow the on-screen instructions.
Make sure that you set up your sound card before exiting the installation
program.

2. To run the game, go the directory where the game has been installed and
type DOS97 (or DOS97.EXE if you prefer).

COMMON PROBLEMS - AND THEIR SOLUTIONS

STUB EXEC FAILED (WIN 95 ONLY)

The Working directory has not been correctly entered on the Program page of
the PIF file. This will normally be C:\ASHES97 (eg the same as the first part
of the command line).

NOTHING HAPPENS - JUST GOES BACK TO DESKTOP (WIN 95 ONLY)

If, when you click on the cricket ball icon it displays a message box, then
goes back to the desktop, this is because the PIF file for DOS97 is not in
the game directory. This will happen if, when you created the PIF file you
chose the copy of DOS97.EXE on the CD, not the one in the game directory in
the hard drive. In this case Windows 95 will put the file in a different
directory, usually in C:\WINDOWS\PIF.

Use the Find command (under the Start button) to locate DOS97.PIF then copy
or move it to the game directory. You can do this using Cut and Paste from
the Edit menu in My Computer.

If you cannot locate the file DOS97.PIF, call Customer Services for advice.

CANNOT FIND SOUND FILES (OR SIMILAR MESSAGES)

This problem0 may occur on some PCs when the game has been installed to a drive
other than C. The solution is to re-install to drive C.

FAILED TO INITIALISE MOUSE DRIVER

You are unlikely to see this message, but if you do it will mean that the
line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT which refers to the mouse has been incorrectly
entered. Check that it refers to the game directory.

INSUFFICIENT MEMORY

First make sure that the game is running in DOS, and not under Windows or in
a DOS Window. Check the installation instructions for your computer. If you
have Windows 95 then you should follow the instructions for Windows 95 users.

In most circumstances, if there is insufficient memory the program will not
run at all, and an appropriate message will be displayed. This is not always
the case, however, as if you have almost enough memory the program may crash
or act strangely (a typical symptom is that you cannot get into a match, or
else when you do, it goes straight to the scorecard).

PLEASE NOTE THAT the kind of memory in short supply is what's called
'conventional memory'. Even if you have 32mb of RAM you will only have 640k of
conventional memory.

On a standard Windows 95 machine you should never have insufficient memory.
However, if you do, then you may find there are unnecessary drivers
(or other programs) being loaded by the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files
associated with the cricket ball icon - just remove the relevant lines from
the PIF file, or put REM at the beginning of each line. On my PC the
only lines in the CONFIG.SYS are:

                DOS=HIGH,UMB
                Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys

and the only lines in the AUTOEXEC.BAT are:

                C:\WINDOWS\SmartDrv
                C:\ASHES\Mouse

This is most likely all you'll need on your machine, if you also have Windows
95. If you followed the Simplified or Detailed installation instructions
then the PIF file supplied will contain only these lines.

On DOS only and Win 3.1 machines, if you have MSDOS version 6, run the
MEMMAKER utility to free up memory. First exit Windows! When you run MEMMAKER
accept all the default options - in particular you DON'T want any EXPANDED
MEMORY!

By the way, you can check how much memory you have by typing MEM. Under DOS 6
this displays the different types of memory, with how much is used, and how
much is free. If you have an earlier version of DOS the important figure is
the 'largest executable program size'. To run BATTLE FOR THE ASHES you need
about 540k (553,000 bytes) of conventional memory - the exact figure
will vary slightly according to the version of the program that you have.

If you have DOS 5, you can't run MEMMAKER, because Microsoft then didn't
think to include this useful utility. Instead, try creating a 'boot disk'
with a minimal AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS (copy the files from your hard
drive, then put a REM in front of any line that seems unnecessary). Leave
in the lines which look SIMILAR to the following:

                AUTOEXEC.BAT

                C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSDC000 etc
                PATH= etc etc
                PROMPT $P$G
SET SOUND=C:\SB16 ) these lines may differ quite a
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 ) lot depending on your sound card
                C:\WINDOWS\MOUSE.COM

                CONFIG.SYS

                DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRIVERS\MTMCDAE.SYS /D:MSCD000 etc
                DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
                DOS=HIGH
                BUFFERS=30
                FILES=40

By the way, if you don't know how to make a 'boot disk' it's easy - just take
a blank 1.44mb disk and type FORMAT A: /S

To use the boot disk put it in drive A: and reset your computer. It should
boot up using the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS on the boot disk instead of the
ones on the hard drive. (To go back to normal operation remove the disk from
drive A: and reboot your PC).

EXPANDED MEMORY

The game will probably NOT run if you have 'expanded memory'. This is a
special type of memory which is simulated, and which is used by only a very
small number of programs, mostly very old ones. Look for the line in
CONFIG.SYS which loads EMM386.EXE and make sure that it has NOEMS after it.
A typical line would read DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS 800

If you have Windows 95, make sure that the CONFIG.SYS in the PIF file does
not have a line referring to EMM386. If it does, delete it. Changes to the
PIF file should not affect normal operation of the computer.

NO SOUND

Please note that there will be no music if you have Windows 95, but do not
have DOS CD drivers. Sound effects begin when a match starts - you should
hear the hubbub of the crowd. If you don't hear any sound in a match - the
thwack of leather against willow, for example, then refer to the section
SOUND PROBLEMS below.

STRANGE CRASHES

First of all, if you have a Windows 95 machine note then in the event of a
crash you may find that the game starts to reload when the machine is
re-booted. Press ESC immediately to go to Windows 95.

If you should fail to do this, then exit the game at once, and return to
Windows 95. It is a good idea to make copies of the AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files in the root directory of your hard drive, because sometimes
Windows 95 can get confused, causing these files to be lost. (When you run a
DOS program using a Windows 95 shortcut, Windows modifies these two files,
based upon the PIF file. In theory it restores the original files when
you exit the program, but if anything untoward occurs, this may not happen.)
Should you experience this problem, press F8 when the Loading Windows 95
message appears, then select Safe Mode. Restore the original files from the
backups you have kept, then reboot. Windows 95 should start normally.

Possible causes of crashes are:

INSUFFICIENT MEMORY - in most circumstances the program will display a
message if there is insufficient memory. This is not always the case,
however. On a Windows 95 machine you may find there are unnecessary drivers
or other programs beng loaded by the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files
associated with the icon - just remove them. On DOS and Win 3.1 machines
if you have MSDOS version 6, run the MEMMAKER utility to free up memory.
If you have an earlier version of DOS try creating a 'boot disk' with a
minimal AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS (copy the files from your hard drive,
then put a REM in front of any line that seems unnecessary).

SOUND PROBLEMS - the installation program may have incorrectly detected your
sound card (if you chose auto-detect). Alternatively, you might have
entered the wrong settings. Try re-running the installation program (from
the game directory on the hard disk), and choose 'no sound'. If this works
then carefully check what the sound card settings should be before once
again re-running the install program.

Please note that if you have an AWE32 or AWE64 sound card you may need to
run the diagnostic program that came with the card prior to starting up
BATTLE FOR THE ASHES.

On some PCs the AUTOEXEC.BAT file has more than one line which sets the
sound card parameters (these lines will begin SET BLASTER, SET GALAXY etc and
include settings such as A220 I5 D1). This is usually a convenience for the
dealer who sold the machine. Delete the unnecessary line.
