If your version of PC USA 3.0 is operating smoothly, there is no need
to continue reading. The instructions below pertain to optional
installation parameters, disk configurations and printers.

OPTIONAL INSTALL PARAMETERS

It is possible to modify the installation routine by typing a hyphen and
specific letters after the word "install" as described below:

install -o

  Overrides autodetection of graphics card type.

  The INSTALL program automatically determines the type of graphics
  card that your computer has. Unfortunately, sometimes graphics cards
  are not always 100% compatible and can be misidentified as invalid.
  Adding -o to the command line will bypass automatic detection and
  allow any graphics mode to be selected.
{
install -s

  No status check for printer.

  If you are using a print spooler, you may need to add this parameter
  in order for your printer to function properly.

install -tn

  Text screen delay (replace n with a number from 0 to 9).

install -gn

  Graphics screen delay (replace n with a number from 0 to 9).

  PC USA uses graphics and text screens in order to increase performance
  and optimize memory usage. Some monitors, especially multi-frequency
  monitors, will appear unstabilized and flicker when changing modes.
  This option allows the user to add a delay after changing modes to
  reduce or eliminate the flicker.
{

More than one optional parameter can be included on the INSTALL command
line. The following example would install for no status check for the
printer and set the text screen delay to 5, and the graphic screen
delay to 4:

install -s -t5 -g4

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS FOR PC USA 3.0

Q: The LaserJet II, IIP, III, or IIIP will not print graphics.
A: When printing from the Laserjet II, IIP, III or IIIP, make sure that the
orientation on the printer is in "portrait". It will not print graphics when
it's in landscape orientation.

Q: The Postscript printer I have will not work.
A: Postscript printers are not supported. Check your printer, you may
have an option to turn the postscript mode off.

Q: I get an error message "Printer not on line, place printer on line and
try again."
A: Go back to the PC USA subdirectory in DOS and run the install routine
again, this time type "install -s" instead of just install. At this point,
make sure the settings in the install routine are correct, then run PC USA
again. This command will override the automatic detection of your printer,
and force it to use the driver you have chosen. Refer to "OPTIONAL
INSTALL PARAMETERS" listed above for more information.
{

Q: When installing, I get an error message "Unsafe Warning: File
PCUSA.EXE was changed, do you want to continue? Stop, Continue, Update".
A: VSafe is causing this error, you must disable it while installing. The
VSafe program usually starts up in the autoexec.bat when you boot up your
computer, so you must edit the autoexec.bat file by putting an REM statement
in front of that line. So it would look similar to the following:
	REM c:\cpav\vsafe /1+/2-/3-/4+/5+/6+/7-/8-
If you are not familiar with DOS and editing files, we would not suggest you
try this on your own.
{

Q: When installing, I get an error message "Packed file is corrupt".
A: If you are running DOS 5.0 you can correct the problem with a Loadfix
command. So, before you start PC USA, you must type "Loadfix PCUSA.EXE".
Or if you are running on a CD-ROM, type "Loadfix PCUSA.BAT". This message
means that the file PCUSA.EXE could not be loaded up into the first 64K of
RAM. Loadfix will load it after the first 64K.
If you are not running DOS 5.0 you can change the number of buffers in your
config.sys file to about 30. This will cause the program to be bumped up
to the second 64K to load.
If you are not familiar with DOS and editing files, we do not suggest trying
this on your own.
{

Q: When installing, I get an error message "Out of Memory Loading File
c:\usmap.vec  #12."
A: This error means you are running out of BASE 640K memory. PC USA
uses only the base 640K on your computer. If you are running a variety of
programs that boot up when starting your computer (such as menu systems,
CD-ROMs, etc.) they may be using more memory than PC USA will allow. If
you are running DOS 5.0 you can load DOS and other programs into high
memory. If you are not running DOS 5.0 you must edit your autoexec.bat and
config.sys to take out the "extras" you are not using (such as a mouse menu,
fastopen, etc). PC USA will take about 483K to run in VGA mode. So you
must free up at least that much space in your base memory.
You can check your memory by typing chkdsk at the c:\ prompt. The last line
tells you how many bytes free you have available in memory.
If you are not familiar with DOS and editing files, we would not suggest you
try this on your own.
{

Q: The mouse will not work outside of Windows in PC USA.
A: You may not have a Microsoft compatible mouse, or you do not have the
mouse booting up in your autoexec.bat file. You can load the mouse by
editing the autoexec.bat file. The command that you need to add may look
like the following:

	mouse\mouse.com

Where "mouse" is the subdirectory that you have the mouse software loaded.
If you are not familiar with DOS and editing files, we would not suggest you
try this on your own.

Q: When trying to run PC USA, an error appears: "Run Time Error 6000
Stack Overflow"
A: This is usually caused by two different versions of DOS running at the
same time. To check, type "ver" at the c:\ prompt. Then type "command"
at the c:\dos prompt. If the versions are different you need to update your
system files. This can be done by copying the system files and command.com
file from a bootable diskette or your DOS system disk. This is a sensitive
area and would not suggest it unless you are familiar with DOS functions.
The sys c:\ function should also be outlined in your DOS manual.

If you have a printer that is not listed, try the printer that is the most
like yours. If you have an older dot-matrix printer, try typing graphics
from the dos prompt and using the shift-printscreen key to print.

For some printers there will not be a difference between "Draft" and "Normal"
modes.

Thanks again.
